                                                                   The Elements of Painting

                                                                             June 28 - 6 July

In this course Tony will address the different kinds on language that can be used in the making of a painting.
"The canvas is flat, the world 3-dimensional. This essential difference brings into play the use of 'language' in the attempt to bridge between the two. I don't dictate the language, but encourage recognition of a fact that a language is used. This is not the same as learning 'technique', as it is an over-arching attitude to the activity rather than a series of practical matters."
Certain basic elements need to be considered:
Tonal truth.
Inventive colour. (Three different palettes are suggested).
Use of different weights of paint.
Attention to 'touch'.
Attention to 'edge'.
Consistency of means so that the arena of the painting activity is recognized.
If all this sounds 'difficult' and not suited to the needs of the beginner, it is not. Inexperienced and very experienced artists continue to work together in my classes to the benefit of both.
